The Book The Revolution Has a Woman’s Face. The Belarus Case

Olga Shparaga’s book The Revolution Has a Woman’s Face. The Belarus Case is an attempt to understand the events of 2020 not as a completed episode, but as an ongoing process of social awakening. The author turns to the experiences of women who became the visible and symbolic face of the Belarusian revolution, and through their actions, solidarity, and everyday resistance analyzes the deep transformations within society. The book lies at the intersection of philosophy, political theory, and lived testimony, offering a language for talking about a revolution that has not yet ended.

The Revolution Has a Woman’s Face. The Belarus Case: I wrote this book over the course of three and a half months. I began working on it in November 2020, shortly after moving to Vilnius due to political persecution. The book explores how and why the awakening of Belarusian society began, as well as why women in particular became its face.

In the first chapter, I examine various forms of women’s activation and solidarity in Belarus — from the emergence of the hashtag #evalution to women’s marches and sisterhood in prisons.

The second chapter is devoted to Belarusian society as the main driving force of the Belarusian revolution-in-progress, as well as to an analysis of the social and political conditions that gave rise to it. I also reflect on what was achieved and what was not achieved in 2020.

In the third chapter, I attempt to conceptualize the awakening of Belarusian society and explain why I use the concept of revolution-in-progress, characterizing it as inclusive and post-nationalOlga Shparaga on her book.
